History of the Hotel Clemar

When did the history of today's Hotel Clemar begin? The exact date will probably never be found out, but it is certain that the first mention of the houses on Wenceslas Square dates back to 1363. Their owners were wealthy citizens who, in addition to the houses, owned a variety of other properties: Orchards, fields, vineyards and breweries.

Much has changed since then. Owners, addresses and even the buildings themselves have changed. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Znojmo was hit by a series of fires that burned down the old wooden houses. They were replaced by stone houses, which can still be found in the center of Znojmo. They received their first descriptive number in 1771, and the present "Five" was then given the number 322, while the "Three" was found in older records under the number 324. Eventually, the buildings became baker's parlors. This was taken care of in the second half of the 18th century by the couple
Piglers.

In the footsteps of the craft

It is probably not surprising that the frequent residents of the town houses on Wenceslas Square
were master bakers, journeymen and their families. What is amazing, however, is the variety of professions and
fates of the other residents who changed over the years behind the walls of the corner house number 14/5.
Cobblers, distillers, butchers, merchants and factory workers lived here. In 1870, for example, Josef Krasny, a supervisor of the state railway company, settled here; at the same time he met the district court clerk Anton Mayer and his servants. Ten years later, one of the apartments was rented by a retired governor and his family, whose three sons were then serving in the Imperial Army. Also in the nineties of the 19th century, a tax official of the Imperial Tax Office,
a civil servant and a fruit merchant lived in the buildung.

Birth of the guesthouse

How did the guesthouse come about? Already at the turn of the 15th to the 16th century, the owner of the house 14/5 was Lorenz Kunischir, who owned the brewing right. However, the foundation of the inn is officially dated to the 19th century, when Vinzenz Böhm established a beer and brandy tavern in the house. From then on, the owners of the house were exclusively innkeepers and storekeepers.

From the guesthouse to the hotel

The incredible story of the houses at Wenceslas Square 14/5 and 12/3 was stopped in the 1950s. Both were given to the Czechoslovak state. Only in 1992 the history continued, when the Austis Guest House was founded. From there, it didn't take long for Hotel Clemar to emerge.
In 2017, the current owners bought the property and gave it a new look and a new name.
And why Clemar? The hotel is special with its history and great atmosphere. That is why it got the name of a great personality of Znojmo Clemens Maria Hofbauer. A priest and saint who was famous for his honesty, generosity and hard work.
